FROM CEAUCESCU TO COVID

HISTORY OF
ROMANIAN STRAY DOGS

What is the problem? (1:33)

In the 1980s, the communist Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu ordered the demolition of traditional homes and built tall apartment blocks instead.

Farmers had to move into the city and were forced to leave their dogs on the street.
The dogs quickly adapted to the new urban environment and since neutering was relatively rare at the time, their numbers multiplied rapidly.
Today, there are about 50,000 street dogs living in Bucharest and the problem is deeply rooted.

Why WE GOT INVOLVED

How a little stray dog inspired The Dog Rose
(3:18 | swiss german with english subtitles)

During a business trip in 2009, Noëlle and her husband Tobi were confronted with the devastating street dog situation in Romania.

Among many other sad examples, they found 2 puppies lying helplessly next to dozens of carcasses in a stinking hole.
That’s when Noëlle made the decision to help. Within a few months, a quarter of the dogs on the premises were castrated and medically treated. Simple shelters were built for the dogs.
Noëlle envisioned that with heart and the support of local helpers, a solution can be found for these poor souls.

THE VISION

A sustainable solution to the stray dog problem can only succeed with a shift in attitude among the younger generation.

At the Dog Rose socially neglected children and traumatized animals heal each other.
Thanks to the daily contact with people, shy orphan dogs become trusting and adoptable.
The Dog Rose vision can be adapted anywhere in the world: it transforms depressing animal shelters into hopeful gardens of hope with frolicking dogs and various sustainability opportunities like:
  • a local veterinary clinic
  • an animal park with vegetarian café
  • a vacation stay for upper class dogs from Bucharest
  • an special event location for children’s parties
  • a volunteer hostel for young international travellers
  • an on-site dog- & cat-food production
  • and much more…
Our declared goal is the long-term financial independence from donations and the development of a non-profit oriented, independent organisation to ensure the survival of the Dog Rose.

14 pillars for a

A SUSTAINABLE CYCLE OF LOVE

Each of our 14 steps is a crucial step to turn desperate, hungry puppies on the streets into happy adoptable family members.

By providing a huge fun-park, professional advice and constantly connecting the local population with our stray animals, the Dog Rose is creating respect and understanding for these beautiful souls and solves the problem from within the country.
